GLOSSARY

Aggregate: A broad category of coarse particulate material used in construction, including sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, recycled concrete, and geosynthetic aggregates.

Drain Rock: Coarse aggregate, approximately 1" in size. May be washed or unwashed according to individual needs & specifications and does not compact. Used for drainage purposes, walkways, and driveways.

Base Rock: Often a main load-bearing layer of stone. Its role is to provide a foundation and to spread the load evenly. The quality of the base is very important for the life of a driveway, roadway or platform.

Maryland Materials, Inc. is happy to provide this Product Calculator for estimating the amount of stone you will need. To use this Calculator:
  1. Enter the length, width, and thickness of the job. Be sure to verify feet or inches for the thickness. Usually 4 to 6 inches is sufficient for a residential driveway where commercial or industrial lots should use 8 to 10 inches.

  2. Next, click on either Base Rock, Drain Rock, or Custom to select the density of the product. The Base Rock and Drain Rock selections will fill in the density of the rock for you; the Custom selection allows you to enter a rock density in the Density field.

  3. Finally, click on the Calculate button. The calculator will estimate the number of tons of aggregate that will be required. Please note that densities will vary somewhat, but the default values assigned for Base or Drain Rock are good standard "rules of thumb" for estimating.
